about

I wrote this song right before the first Women's March in 2017. It was my own little act of hope and rebellion. Part of the inspiration for the song came from women I've had the privilege to know and work with who are survivors of sexual exploitation. Another piece of inspiration came from the cross-generational work that I've seen taking place between women, the mentorship and learning that is taking place. I also found inspiration in thinking about my daughter and the example that I would like to set for her. Throughout my time completing my master's degree in Peace Studies, I thought about the great role of music in the 1960s and how music played a role in activism and social change. I love that music can act as a catalyst in this way and wanted to add my voice to the many songs that have been written as a form of social change and resistance.

lyrics

VERSE ONE
Sister, you've been crying I can tell
Sister, there's a secret where you dwell
You know you are stronger than you think
Rise up, start preaching with your feet

CHORUS
And the sound of our marching is like prayers upon the street
And the chorus of our singing lights the way for those who weep
And when you feel discouraged and you think you can't go on
Lift your head up, you're not walking alone

VERSE TWO
Mother, oh the stories that you hold
Mother, oh the lies that you've been told
You have talked back, you have walked so many miles
Mother, let me walk with you awhile

CHORUS

VERSE THREE
Daughter, I will do all that I can
Daughter, you are strength and you are plan and you are purpose
To give light to what is dark
Let me hold you, let me show you where to start

CHORUS
